Most is one of my favorite restaurants in Budapest, partly for their brunch menu. "Most" means "now" in Hungarian, and it's certainly a trendy spot."Now" does not describe the service. It is slow. Do not come here if you are in a hurry. The moderately priced brunch specials are only available on the weekends, and they include a main course, a drink, and a dessert. Here's a picture of the inside:
I met up with three other friends and we decided to sit outside, since it was such a nice day. We had all eaten brunch at Most before, and we eagerly scanned the menu for our favorites. Three out of four of us ordered the Eggs Benedict (including myself). The last ordered "American Chocolate Chip Pancakes". It feels redundant typing "American Pancakes", but it's a necessary distinction here. Plain "pancakes" in Hungary are "palacsinta", or crepes.
Maple syrup-check!
My friend tells me these pancakes were on the thin side- not "real American pancakes", but they were tasty.
Now we come to the Eggs Benedict. I almost didn't stop to take a picture because they smelled so good! That's a mixed salad and potato wedges on the side. The Hollandaise sauce was perfectly creamy. Here, also, there was an authenticity problem-- no English Muffins. But it was so delicious anyway I really can't complain.
| Makos Guba |
Two folks got the makos guba, a poppyseed bread pudding. One got the fruit salad. It was plain and boring. I ordered the brownie. "No, not the brownie!" my companions entreated. They had eaten it before. It was dry, they reported, and underwhelming. Not an authentic brownie. Here's what arrived:
A perfectly moist and rich brownie, with a strawberry garnish and... what's that little pot of sauce? I'm still not sure, but it tasted like a very light custard. It was room temperature. It was a delicious mystery.
